Using Census data, we establish how levels of marriage, cohabitation, and divorce have shifted over time among older adults, documenting the drops in marriage and widowhood and the increases in divorce and cohabitation for men and women.
Additionally, we outline the theoretical and conceptual explanations for these current patterns and consider the ramifications of these changes for individual health and well-being.
Christina Blacklaws, Director of Family Law at The Co-operative Legal Services, said: “There are all sorts of different reasons why people cohabit but one of the important aspects of this report is that it shows how socially acceptable it is as a way of forming a family.
“That was always a taboo in days gone by – you might live together, or ‘live in sin’ as a precursor to marriage but what the research now shows is that for the majority of people it is fine if people chose together and have children.
Older adults have not been immune to family change.Widowhood fell slightly among men from 7.5% in 1990 to 5.7% in 2015.The decline was sharper for women, whose levels of widowhood plummeted from 31.6% to 18.9%.Many of the boomers who first divorced as young adults got remarried and are divorcing yet again (Brown & Lin, 2012).Our goal is to review the recent literature on older adult (which we define as aged 50 years and older) marriage, cohabitation, and divorce.
